Handbook Of Industrial System Safety Engineering & Risk Assessment : Basic Theories , Analytical Methods & Applications
Even though the levels of benzene and 1,3-butadiene routinely encountered in many urban locations may be more dangerous than the photochemical oxidant (ozone) levels that precipitate “ozone action days” in most cities throughout the country, there are no “benzene” or “butadiene” action days. Using a systems approach, this Handbook discusses the best system safety techniques used in various industries, types of hazard analyses, safety checklists and other safety tools, as well as techniques for investigating accidents. The book explains how to set up a data management system for a system safety program, and delves into risk assessment, including ways to conduct a risk evaluation which will provide engineers with an efficient reference in a critical area, the clarity of the writing along with the case studies and illustrations making it accessible to non-technical professionals needing a how to guide for the safety management of complex systems. Regulators can assess human exposure to toxic air contaminants with technologies of varying degrees of accuracy and sophistication. They can measure exposures directly by monitoring blood and other bodily fluids for “biomarkers” that provide internal indicators of exposure to toxicants; somewhat less directly by attaching individual air-quality-monitoring devices to workers and residents in suspect areas; and even less directly through ambient-air-quality monitoring devices that agencies install in such areas to determine the typical concentrations of relevant hazardous air pollutants that people in those areas are breathing. As technological systems become more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to identify safety hazards and to control their impact. Engineers today are finding that safety and risk touch upon every aspect of any engineered process, from system design all the way through disposal. By employing highly pragmatic examples from a number of industries, this Handbook provides a comprehensive and easily accessible guide on how to build safety into products as well as into industrial processes. This Handbook can be also used by graduate classes involved with ergonomics and occupational safety as well as engineering.
