Mechanical arts as engineering and technology are embedded in the spiritual life of mankind. Gases passing through an ideal gas turbine undergo three thermodynamic processes. These are isentropic compression, isobaric (constant pressure) combustion and isentropic expansion. Together these make up the Brayton cycle. Gas turbines are also used in many liquid propellant rockets, the gas turbines are used to power a turbopump to permit the use of lightweight, low pressure tanks, which saves considerable dry mass. This Handbook was written as an attempt to show how certain of the material achievements arose and became part of that complex of culture traits we call civilization. It is the story of a sociological species distinct, and covers his accomplishments in the field of discovery, invention, and engineering from prehistoric times to the present day.
