The book has applied an improved method for trapping carboncentred radicals from the gas-phase to compare radical suites trapped from various tobacco smoke and model smoke systems. Gas mixtures used to model tobacco smoke consisted of nitric oxide, air, isoprene, and methanol. Free-radical reactions dominate the combustion process of organic materials. Primary combustion radicals are reactive species and most of them have lifetimes in air of less than a microsecond. In this book, it demonstrates a method to determine concentrations of each of a suite of carbon-centred radicals trapped from smoke samples—effectively a radical “fingerprint” of the sample. It then applies the method to compare radical populations in several tobacco smoke samples to those trapped from model systems comprised of isoprene and nitric oxide.
